Perspectives from Within IV

Group Photography Exhibition

Deadline: December 1, 2021

We are pleased to announce that proposals for participation in the next edition of our group photography exhibition series titled, Perspectives from Within (PFW), are now being accepted.

Exhibition Concept

The fourth edition of our PFW exhibition sharpens our focus on exploring and celebrating Africa as told from insider perspectives. The theme for this edition is “Culture Through Fashion”. Here, we explore the significance of fashion on African cultures and vice versa. The purpose of this exhibition is to highlight the beauty in African people through the various ways in which they adorn their bodies. Essentially, the exhibition will feature photographs from a group of African photographers that directly, or indirectly, incorporate fashion into their work. 

Questions that drive the curatorial conceptualization of this exhibition are: How has contemporary fashion in Africa preserved, and or adapted, cultural traditions? What is African fashion expected to be, and how are Africans perpetuating, and or challenging, these expectations? What does a world look like where Africans are free to express their genuine selves as they wish through fashion?

Exhibition Details

• A $250 USD artist participation fee will be awarded to each selected artist
• The exhibition will be installed for two weeks (Jan 22 – Feb 5th, 2022) at the Cube Project Space in Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex in San Antonio, TX in association with our annual African Market Festival
• A page on our website will be dedicated to the exhibition for the year (Jan 22 – Dec 31)
• A limited edition set of all selected images will be made available as part of a print sale

Eligibility Requirements

• Submit application form by the deadline
• Must be an African photographer
• Must have a completed project or body of work that is available for exhibition. The project submitted should have a formal title and project summary.
• Agree to exhibition terms and conditions

Submission Process & Timeline

• The submission system will be open from October 25 – December 1, 2021. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent to all applicants no later than December 5, 2021
